Let the Fields Lie Fallow

Each winter, I step away from my discipline of writing and publishing to “let the fields lie fallow.” Like the oak trees outside my window, like the dormice and grizzly bears, I hope to (besides some book edits) take the colder months to rest, recuperate, and prepare for spring flourishing.

Thank you for the precious minutes you’ve spent with my work over the past year (and years!) Thank you for your words of encouragement to keep going (this writing gig is not easy!). Thank you for your prayers. Thank you for your accompaniment.

If you’d like to read some new work while I’m away, here is “Breastfeeding: A Liturgy of the Hours,” which imagines breastfeeding as an exercise in monastic prayer (published in The Windhover).

And for those susceptible to the winter blues (like me!), here’s an essay that seeks to relish the graces in winter (published in Dappled Things’ blog). A different version of this essay will be a chapter in my upcoming book In Praise of Houseflies: Meditations on the Gifts in Everyday Quandaries. Enjoy the sneak peek!

Praying God blesses each of you with a rich Advent season, a joyous Christmas, and a New Year full of hope.

Looking forward to sharing more of what God given me in 2025!

Love,

Elise
